The Oculus Rift has been in the news a lot lately. In case you haven’t heard, the Rift is a virtual reality headset that allows the wearer to experience a 3D simulated environment as if he/she were actually there.
Back in March 2014, Facebook announced that it was purchasing Oculus VR for $400 million in cash. Since then, a platform has gone public where developers can create their own games and software that utilize the technology. As things stand, the XBOX Kinect has been a widely known leader in the field of motion gaming. Its technology has allowed XBOX to track gestures and create a very realistic and interactive gaming experience. The Oculus Rift takes this to the next level.
Because of the way the Oculus Rift works, it’s difficult to demonstrate how impressive the 3D technology is over the internet. The Rift uses two lenses in a headset that resembles a ski mask. The two 960 x 1080 pixel displays merge to form one 1920 x 1080 display.
Sample demos include a house that you can walk around and explore and a roller coaster that you can ride. Now that the technology has been out long enough, games have been developed for it as well like the popular video game Skyrim.
