Electronics Design Group and Pearl River HS student Rob Gullo team up and send a Weather Ballon to space

Pearl River, NY (EDGOnline) July 1, 2013

Electronics Design Group, Inc. (EDG), an Electronic Systems Integrator headquartered in Piscataway NJ, has officially been to space. Rob Gullo (son of EDG owner, Bob Gullo) spent the last semester of his junior year preparing and building a weather balloon to send to space.

Rob used his study period under the guidance of Teacher/Football Coach, Steven Lonergan, at Pearl River High School to create a weather balloon that could record video and data from space. It took Rob over two months to build a capsule that could house the recording equipment and withstand the pressure of space.

This is the first time anyone in Rockland has does something like this,

said Rob.

The project came with a price tag, so Rob created a Kickstarter account to help fund his mission. Kickstarter is a crowd-funding website for artists, inventors, and scientists to raise money for projects. Bob Gullo jumped at the opportunity to help his son Rob accomplish this feat.

“The weather balloon was my son’s science project,” said Bob Gullo. “Part of the project was to raise money, so I was one of the main sponsors because, well, he’s my kid!”

The weather balloon’s flight crossed three states, traveled over 150 miles, at the weather balloon’s peak it reached 90,000 feet, and the temperature dipped below -70 (F).
