Ever spend your day wishing you could be relaxing on a beach in Hawaii or taking a stroll through Paris? Or even checking out a few art pieces at the Met? Of course, you soon realize that you’ve been sitting at your desk for the last hour blankly staring at your computer screen. But what if you could travel to these exciting new places without having to move at all?
That’s where virtual reality comes in: the ability to interact with and experience a computer-generated simulation in a seemingly tangible way through the use of special equipment. And although what we dream about experiencing may not be available just yet, what you thought might not have been possible in the near future may actually be closer than you think.
Meet Oculus VR, a company founded by Palmer Luckey that has created the groundbreaking Oculus Rift. Oculus Rift is a revolutionary virtual-reality headset that can soon change how we view the world. The headset began as an idea from Luckey and soon developed into a prototype that saw its debut at the 2012 E3. Following the appearance, the company launched a Kickstarter campaign in order to raise funds for further development of the goggles and managed to raise over $2.4 million in 36 hours, greatly surpassing its goal of $250,000.
So what can the Oculus Rift do? Currently, the goggles are designed primarily for gaming. The wearer can experience an incredibly realistic and immersive gaming experience when donning the headset. Although only two titles are officially considered “Oculus-ready,” instructions are provided to help you integrate the Oculus Rift with any game. When we say incredibly realistic, we mean it.
