Corning has been a leader in the development of glass for over 160 years. After determining that consumer’s biggest complaints were about screen breakage from everyday drops, the company told their scientists to try to find a solution to the problem.
More than 70% of cover glass breakage results from drops on rough surfaces like asphalt and concrete. Corning’s fractographers developed tests to replicate real-world drops that resemble those that would typically result in screen breakage.
The challenge was to develop a product that could withstand their drop test.
Gorilla Glass 4 is the final product that stood up to their real-world drop test. The new version of the famous glass is up to two times tougher than competitive glass designs while still remaining thin and light, as it has with previous versions.
The new version of the glass can survive drops up to 80% of the time. This is impressive considering some versions of glass shatter nearly 100% of the time when dropped. Gorilla Glass 4 is the cover glass of choice for device manufacturers around the globe. Over 40 manufacturers design Gorilla Glass into more than 1,450 products and use Gorilla Glass as a key selling point.
Since its launch in 2007, Gorilla Glass has been featured in more than 3 billion devices.
