EDG is starting a new series of blog posts called “Kickstarter of the Week,” where we highlight some cool products up for funding at one of our favorite crowdsourcing websites, kickstarter.com. This week it’s Plug, an almost DIY-way of having your own cloud file hosting.
If you don’t know what Kickstarter is, it’s a crowdsourcing website that aims to help find public funding for independently created projects in technology, art, photography and much more.
This week’s kickstarter is the CGC team’s Plug, a device that plugs to your Internet and any USB drive and automatically makes it available for all your phones, tablets, laptops and desktops to “share” the same files via the Plug app. Plug wants to stop people from having different files in different devices, or worse, to-and-from tiny cloud folders that they have to move manually themselves.
To paint a clearer picture of what exactly the device does, the CGC team writes on its kicktstarter page, “Your iPhone contains exactly the same things as your laptop, even if it doesn’t have the same size. Your devices are just like frames, through which you can see exactly the same content, at all times.”
What’s great about Plug is that you’re not limited to the size of each device - if your phone does not have the extra space for a movie, it can be streamed online via the app. In a way, it “upgrades” your device’s memory by giving it access to all the files on your Plug, without storing it locally on your phone. So if you’ve got a 3 TB drive connected to your Plug, you can technically have a 3 TB iPhone. How cool is that?
But what happens if you’re going away on vacation with Peter Pan and the Lost Boys to Neverland? No worries! Plug works a bit like Spotify in which you can choose which files you want to be accessible without Internet connection.
With Plug, your available storage works like ink cartridges. A USB hub is included with every Plug purchase and allows you to add up to 8 devices to your own DIY cloud.
Even if you don’t have a drive to connect to Plug, a brand new one will cost you about 20x less than storage in the Cloud. And you won’t pay for it every year. That’s why you can clearly put all of your content on Plug, and not only a small part of it.
Plug also has other features such as instant file sharing, automated-backup compatibilities, private storage, TV and Hi-Fi player connectivity, and much more.
You can find out more, or support, Plug by going to its kickstarter page.
