Buffalo, a network solutions company, released the AirStation AC130 / N90 Gigabit Dual Band Wireless Router. This product offer speeds up to three times faster than pervious 802.11n wireless solutions, up to 1.3 Gbps.
However, this is an investment in the future, there are currently no devices on the market that are compatible with the new 802.11ac standard. Chips that will allow devices to connect to the 802.11ac network are currently in production and are expected to be released next year.
But don’t worry, the Buffalo Airstation offers backwards compatibility to the 802.11n standard. Ranking up with high end current generation wireless routers users can receive speeds up to 450 Mbps on a single device and 1750 Mbps through a household.
A 2 hour HD movie from iTunes is around 3.5 GBs a download. If you take into consideration the 802.11n (current standard) this movie would take 62.22 seconds to complete. Taking into consideration 802.11ac (future standard) the movie would take 21.54 seconds to complete. Although 62 seconds doesn’t seem like that long to wait for a movie it’s the difference in having to watch the download bar and being able to sit down and start watching.
If you are thinking of upgrading or purchasing a new wireless router you need take the new 802.11ac standard into consideration. Netgear is currently in development of its new R6300 Wi-Fi router which is set for release later this month. Although Buffalo was first to release a device with the new 802.11ac standard, more will be released in the coming months. 802.11ac a huge speed upgrade and if that’s important it’s something that you will want in your home.
Note to wireless device users. A major source of battery loss can be the device’s attempt to find wireless signals. The harder the device has to work the more power it needs and this results in lower battery life for the device. The improved radio and speeds on these new products will help improve battery life of your wireless devices.
