Extreme Home, Controlled
The owner of this home has a research-driven creative side and wanted to see how far he could stretch a Control4 system’s capabilities across his home. This client declared a preference for decor with clean lines and neutral palettes. Based on the client’s lifestyle and interest in entertainment, the home now includes state-of-the-art electronics, a swimming pool and cabana, sport court, workout room, and 3 guest bedrooms.

One of the more specific requests this client had was for a retina scanner that could unlock the doors to his wine cellar after the glass doors changed from translucent to clear. As the wine cellar doors open, an audio file plays through the invisible speakers in the tasting room that mimic the sound of the doors from Star Trek. By the time EDG finished working with the client, there was hardly a device in the house that didn’t connect back to the main Control4 system. In the end, the retina scanner was swapped out for a remote door lock, however, there is wiring in place just in case they want to add one in the future.
For a creative person, this was the perfect project. EDG happily provided the homeowner with the right tools to experiment on his own. “The Control4 MyHome software is one of the main reasons that the Control4 system was such a good fit for this client” says David Devanna, Systems Designer at EDG. “He’s free to play with the system, reprogram settings whenever he wants and integrate new products as they become available.” One area of technology this client is currently experimenting with is Apple’s Siri voice command.

Once the Control4 MyHome system was selected, EDG began identifying all the gadgets inside the client’s home that could be controlled. Products that were integrated include: lighting, security, outdoor pool, water flow detection, 16x16 HDMI video matrix switcher, 40 motorized shades and drapes, 6 zones of HVAC, 17 CCTV cameras, 6 integrated door locks, 2 driveway sensors, 3 motorized garage doors, Eragy energy monitoring, towel warmers, refrigerator, oven and freezer, translucent wine cellar glass doors, and 32 occupancy sensors to trigger the lights.

EDG delivered the final project to the client as expected. As problems arose, the EDG team was quick to resolve any issues. Despite so many network connections being created, the home network had to be kept clean and stable. In addition, EDG had to make sure the client didn’t play around with the system until it was completed and ready to be handed over.

This project was awarded Electronic House magazine’s top honor, Smart Home of the Year Gold Award because the client now has a creatively automated home that utilizes state-of-the-art equipment and innovative solutions that the whole family can use and enjoy without concerns of disrupting the functionality. The entire system was seamlessly installed in a non-intrusive way that prevents the house from looking too “techy” or messy; discreet wall-mounted touchpanels keep the visibility of the electronics to a minimum. The next phase of this client’s project will involve designing and installing a dedicated home theater on the lower level of the house. Seeing how innovative the client’s other projects have been, there is no doubt this home theater will be far from ordinary.
