5 Oscar Nominees Available Now on 4K Blu-ray
February 22nd, 2017
The 89th Academy Awards will be airing this Sunday, February 26. Before Oscars time, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the nominated movies. It certainly makes watching the 3-plus-hour show a lot more fun.
Watching one of these stellar films in a home theater is like its own separate event—especially when you add 4K into the mix. This technology can deliver more realism from movies and TV content with four times the resolution of 1080p HD. Looking for a few other reasons to upgrade? Here are five 2017 Oscar nominees currently available on 4K Blu-ray:
Arrival. This spectacular sci-fi film is up for eight awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Cinematography. Besides all of the accolades, it has aliens, which are perfect fodder for 4K. Amy Adams stars as a linguist brought in to investigate those aliens, which have landed in 12 different spacecraft across the globe. It also stars Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker.
Hacksaw Ridge. War is not pretty, but it can be riveting in 4K. This tech can put you in the middle of the true tale of Desmond Doss, a conscientious objector, combat medic, and war hero. The drama earned a total of six nominations, including nods for Best Picture, Best Director (Mel Gibson), and Best Actor (Andrew Garfield).
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne shows us what witches and wizards were like well before Harry Potter. There’s definitely a bit of magic for 4K viewers to ogle here; the fantasy received nominations for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. It also features Dan Fogler, Katherine Waterston, Colin Farrell, Ezra Miller, Ron Perlman, Jon Voight, and Johnny Depp.
Star Trek Beyond. This voyage of the Starship Enterprise dropped J.J. Abrams as a director, but picked up an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. That work gets quite a showcase in 4K, with sharp details on uniforms, spacecraft, aliens, unchartered planets, and fight scenes. In between all of the imagery, there’s also Chris Pine, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban Anton Yelchin, and Idris Elba.
Suicide Squad. People have argued the merits of this film since it’s summer release. However, there’s one thing that can’t be denied—how cool the characters look. The superhero blockbuster snagged a nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, which it deserves for both quality and quantity. After all, the film’s lineup features Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, and Cara Delevingne.
Just remember that to view any of the above films on 4K Blu-ray, you will need the film on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, as well as a 4K TV and a 4K player. If you haven’t gotten the latter yet, Sony just announced the UBP-X800 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player. Available starting next month, the UBP-X800 can play back 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD discs, as well as stream 4K and High Dynamic Range (HDR) content.
